How It All Started – The Circle Star Family
The Story of Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors
What began around a family coffee table as a vision soon grew into something far greater. Founded on a passion for shooting sports, genuine friendship, and a commitment to community, Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors was built with one simple goal in mind: to create a place where people could gather, learn, and enjoy the outdoors together.
In 2013, Jake Cawthon—then an active-duty Texas Game Warden—set out to obtain his Federal Firearms License. Raised as the son of a Texas Ranger, Jake grew up immersed in law enforcement and outdoor culture, developing a lifelong appreciation for firearms and sporting traditions. After transitioning into a role as a Grimes County Police Officer in 2016, Jake opened a small, part-time firearms shop out of his garage in Anderson, Texas. That modest beginning marked the birth of Circle Star Firearms.
On the very first day Circle Star opened its doors, Jake met Jason Westmoreland, a like-minded outdoorsman who was also preparing to open a firearms business in Anderson. The two quickly connected through their shared love of hunting, firearms, and community. It soon became clear that while the town might not need two separate stores, it was perfectly suited for one exceptional one. That realization laid the foundation for a lasting friendship and a strong business partnership.
Jason brought with him extensive experience in business management and distribution, immediately recognizing the potential of combining their strengths. With complementary skill sets and a shared vision, Jake and Jason committed to growing Circle Star together. The decision was made to move into a larger location and operate full-time, allowing the business to evolve into a trusted and well-respected firearms retailer known for its honesty, approachability, and customer-first mindset.
From the beginning, Jake and Jason established core values that remain unchanged today: everyone who walks through the doors of Circle Star is welcomed as a friend, and no one is ever dismissed because of age, gender, or level of firearms knowledge. Earning a customer’s trust and helping them find exactly what they need—whether they know it when they arrive or not—has always been regarded as the highest honor.
As the business continued to grow, additional help was needed to maintain the level of service customers had come to expect. Longtime friends and hunting companions Dustin Yaklin and Boogie Love joined the team. Dustin’s deep knowledge of firearms and Boogie’s reputation as a local outdoorsman and bird-hunting enthusiast added new layers of expertise and personality to the Circle Star family.
After four successful years in the original storefront, it became evident that Circle Star had outgrown its space. Drawing from years of collaboration and a shared vision for a premier sporting goods destination, Jake and Jason took the next bold step forward. In July of 2022, construction began on the future home of Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors.
During the building phase, another trusted friend and team member, Daniel Evans, joined the company full-time to manage the new location. With nearly 20 years of management experience and specialized expertise in night hunting and thermal imaging, Daniel played a key role in preparing the flagship store for its next chapter.
Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors celebrated the grand opening of its new flagship location on March 18, 2023. Built by an A-team of friends and supported by an incredible community, the opening exceeded all expectations. More than 3,800 people attended the celebration, marking the launch of a new era for the business.
Since then, Circle Star has continued to grow and evolve. Inventory specialist Dominque Lowery joined the team to help preserve the company’s core values as the business expanded, followed by Texas A&M graduate Hayes (Wyatt) Odum and firearms industry expert Austin Elbert. Together, the team ensures that Circle Star’s standards, culture, and customer experience remain uncompromised.
Today, the mission of Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors remains exactly as it was at the beginning: no one leaves a stranger, and everyone is treated with respect—regardless of background or experience. Most importantly, the trust placed in the Circle Star team by its customers continues to be the greatest honor of all.
