Sitting around Jake Cawthon’s family coffee table, a dream was born. A dream founded not only on a love of shooting sports, but from the love of friendship, community, and having fun.
The founder, Jake Cawthon, was an active-duty Texas Game Warden when he decided to embark on obtaining his Federal Firearms License in 2013. Son of a Texas Ranger, Jake was raised in a law enforcement and outdoors culture that made him passionate about firearms and the sporting goods industry. As he transitioned from Game Warden to a local Grimes County Police Officer in 2016, he decided to open up a small part-time shop on the side of his garage in Anderson, Texas that became the birthplace of Circle Star Firearms.
On the opening day of Circle Star, Jake met an enthused outdoorsman named Jason Westmoreland. They quickly connected over their shared love of hunting and firearms soon becoming best friends and business partners.
Jason coming from a business management and distribution background, he immediately saw the potential that the two could have together – it was a match made in heaven. With Jason onboard, it was time to find a larger location and move to full-time hours. Over the next few years, the business grew into a well-regarded firearms store that had a reputation for being fun, honest, and focused on the needs of its customers.
Jake and Jason's core values were simple; no one who came into Circle Star left a stranger, and no one was ever dismissed because of age, gender, or a lack of firearm knowledge. It is a huge honor to both men to also gain the trust of someone to help them find exactly what they were looking for, even if they weren't always sure of what that was when they walked in.
With the business growing and paperwork becoming more involved by the day, the need for a third person to run their operation soon became apparent. The needed to find someone who was as passionate about managing books as they were about the outdoors, this was hard to find. In Jake and Jason's eyes there was only one person who matched that description, longtime friend, hunting buddy, and accounting guru Tiffany Perry. Tiffany worked to help keep the paperwork flawless and this would help allow Jake and Jason to focus on the one thing they loved the most – serving the customers who quickly became friends and family.
To help ensure that everyone who walked through the front door of Circle Star got the attention they deserved, it wasn't long before more hands was needed to run the small store. Good friends and hunting companions, Dustin Yaklin and Boogie Love, were soon added to the roster. Dustin, a walking encyclopedia on all things firearms, and Boogie, a local celebrity, outdoorsman, and bird hunting enthusiast, were welcomed additions to the Circle Star Family which brought new branches of expertise.
After 4 years in their small location, the realization that the business had outgrown its small storefront became obvious. Over their years working together, Jake and Jason had compiled a playbook full of ideas for their dream sporting goods store and decided it was time to implement it – the next chapter of Circle Star Firearms began. Ground was broken in July of 2022 for the new home of Circle Star Firearms and Outdoors.
During the building process, another longtime friend and part-time helper, Daniel Evans, was brought on full-time to manage the soon to be new location. Daniel who is an expert on all things related to night hunting and thermal imaging brought with him nearly 20 years of management experience.
The flagship location of Circle Star Firearms assembled with an A-team of friends, had its grand opening on March 18th of 2023. The support of the community was humbling, to say the least. With over 3,800 people taking part in the celebration, the Texas-sized grand opening was a hit, and the new chapter of Circle Star Firearms and Outdoors was born.
Since then, the store has continued to grow tremendously. Another longtime friend and inventory specialist, Dominque Lowery, has been invited to the team. Dom has helped to ensure all the original core values of Circle Star are never compromised, no matter how large we get.
Till this day, our core values still remain true; no one who comes into Circle Star Firearms and Outdoors leaves a stranger, and no one will ever be dismissed because of age, gender, or a lack of firearm knowledge. But most importantly, to gain the trust of someone to help them find exactly what they are looking for will always be considered our biggest honor.
