Huntsville is one of the towns our customers come from most.

Getting here

From downtown, take 11th Street west out of town. It turns into Highway 30, and you stay on it about 25 miles to Roans Prairie. Turn left on Highway 90 and we’re about 2 miles down on the left. It’s about 29 miles and 35 minutes.

Buying as a Sam Houston State student

• 18 to 20 years old: you can buy a rifle or shotgun here. Handguns are 21 and up.
• From out of state? ATF treats a student as a resident of the state where they live while in school, so you can buy here as a Texas resident while you live here. If your ID shows another address, bring a government document with your Huntsville address, like a vehicle registration or voter card. A lease or utility bill doesn’t count.
• On campus, SHSU lets License to Carry holders 21 and up carry concealed, except in excluded areas like athletic events and venues and the health and counseling centers.
• If you have your LTC and live in SHSU housing, your handgun has to stay in a locked case or safe you supply when you’re not carrying it. Long guns aren’t allowed in campus housing at all, so keep your deer rifle somewhere else.

Hunting Sam Houston National Forest

About 54,000 acres of Sam Houston National Forest are in Walker County, and the whole forest is public hunting land. You need a hunting license, the $48 Annual Public Hunting Permit, and an electronic sign-in on site each time. Rules worth knowing before you go:

• Hunter orange is required, even during archery season.
• Hogs can be hunted in daylight only, and no dogs for deer, turkey or hogs.
• Stands can stay up 72 hours at most and not within 50 yards of a designated road, a unit boundary or a campsite.
• No target shooting in the forest, so check your zero before the trip. We’ll sight it in for you here.

Huntsville State Park isn’t open to regular hunting. It only hosts TPWD drawn hunts.

Walker County deer rules

Walker County uses the same deer rules as Grimes County, where our store is: four deer, no more than two bucks and two antlerless, with the antler restrictions on bucks that our deer season checklist spells out. In general season, antlerless deer are legal from opening day, November 7, 2026, through November 29.

Shooting inside Huntsville city limits

Huntsville’s code (Sec. 32-25) makes it an offense to fire a gun inside the city. The code lists defenses, including an established shooting range, lawful self-defense, on-duty peace officers and state corrections officers, and deer hunting on federal or state land with permission. That’s how we read it, but we’re not lawyers.

Transfers and the used rack

Have your online gun orders shipped here. FFL transfers are $30 a gun, and you take it home once your background check clears. While you’re in, look over our used rack, since you never know what’s turned up. If you’re after a suppressor, it goes home on a 4473 now, and we’ll do the Form 4 for you if you want it registered. Need a barrel threaded or something fixed? Our gunsmith threads barrels for $200 and quotes any repair before starting. We sight in thermal scopes too, the same $50 as a rifle, plus ammo if you don’t bring yours. It’s an easy run down Highway 30 any day of the week.
