Since October 9, 2026, you can buy a suppressor the same way you buy a rifle. ATF doesn’t require a Form 4, so a can goes home on a Form 4473 and a background check. The same goes for an SBR/SBS (short-barreled rifle or shotgun) or an AOW (the National Firearms Act’s “any other weapon” class). Our guide to buying a suppressor in Texas walks through the change. If you want it registered, we’ll do the Form 4 or Form 1 for you, and our gunsmith can thread your barrel so the rifle is ready for a can.

On a 4473
You fill out the form and we run your background check. Once it clears, it goes home with you.
On a Form 4, if you want it registered
We’ll do the eForm 4 for you, as an individual or through a trust, and take your fingerprints and photos right here. It goes home once ATF approves it, and the tax is $0.
Why would anyone still file? ATF calls this an enforcement policy, not a change in the law, and says enforcement could come back. It also says a can that isn’t registered generally can’t be registered later. If that worries you, go with the Form 4.

- The gun, cased or boxed and unloaded, if we’re threading the barrel or mounting a can.

Questions
Can I walk in and buy a suppressor now?
Yes. You buy it on a 4473, the same as a rifle.
Do I still need a Form 4 or a tax stamp?
No. The Form 4 is optional now, and the tax has been $0 since January 1, 2026. Machine guns and destructive devices are the exception; they still go through ATF with the $200 tax.
Should I register my suppressor anyway?
That’s up to you. ATF says this could change, and that a can left unregistered generally can’t be registered later. If you want it registered, we’ll do the Form 4 for you and take your fingerprints here.
Suppressor or silencer: is there a difference?
No, same thing. “Silencer” is what federal law calls it. Most shooters say suppressor, because it quiets the shot but doesn’t silence it.
Can I hunt with a suppressor in Texas?
Yes. Texas Parks and Wildlife allows suppressors for hunting any game, as long as you follow federal, state and local law.
