Navasota is the biggest town in Grimes County, and we’re just up the road past Anderson, the county seat. Same county, same deer rules, and a short drive.
Getting here
From downtown, head east on Washington Avenue (Highway 105) and keep straight onto Highway 90 north. Stay on 90 through Anderson, and we’re on the right about 5.5 miles past town. It’s about 15 miles, 25 minutes.
Grimes County hunting rules
- Deer: general season runs November 7, 2026 to January 3, 2027 (North Zone). Four deer, no more than two bucks and two antlerless, with antler restrictions on bucks. Antlerless deer are legal in archery, youth and muzzleloader seasons, and in general season from November 7 through November 29, 2026.
- Dove, 2026 to 2027 season: Central Zone, September 1 to October 25, then December 11 to January 14.
- Ducks, 2026 to 2027 season: North Zone, November 14 to 29 and December 5 to January 31.
- Geese go by Eastern Zone dates, so check the Outdoor Annual for those.

Watch the county lines on the rivers
The Navasota River is the line between Grimes and Brazos County, and it runs into the Brazos River southwest of town. Across the Brazos is Washington County, and its deer rules aren’t the same as ours. Washington County has 16 doe days in 2026 (November 14 to 29), and antlerless deer taken there have to be reported to TPWD within 24 hours. If your lease is across the river, go by that county’s rules.
Public hunting nearby
Sam Houston National Forest, east of us in Walker, Montgomery and San Jacinto counties, is public hunting land. Our Huntsville page covers the permit and the rules. To the west, Somerville Lake has waterfowl blinds drawn through Recreation.gov and hog hunting by permit.
Hogs on your own place
You don’t need a hunting license to take feral hogs on private land when the landowner says it’s OK (hunter education rules still apply). The Grimes County AgriLife Extension office is right there in Navasota, at 203 Veterans Memorial Drive.
Shooting in Navasota
We didn’t find a blanket ban on firing a gun in Navasota’s city code, but it does ban the use or display of firearms in city parks, playgrounds and pools, hunting or shooting birds in the city, and hunting or shooting at the municipal airport. State law still makes it a crime to fire a gun in a public place, or on or across a public road. That’s how we read it, but we’re not lawyers.
Transfers and gunsmithing
We’re close enough that one stop can cover a few things. Drop off a rifle with our gunsmith for threading or a sight-in, and while you’re here, pick up the gun you ordered online. An FFL transfer is $30 a gun.
