Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors has been part of Anderson, Texas since 2011. We started small, grew up alongside this community and give back to it every chance we get.
How Circle Star grew up in Anderson
Circle Star began in 2011 as a hobby at Jake Cawthon’s kitchen table and grew into a small, part-time shop in his garage in Anderson. Jake knows this county from the inside. He served as a Texas game warden and in Grimes County law enforcement, and he is the son of a Texas Ranger. On the shop’s first day he met Jason Westmoreland, an outdoorsman with a head for business, and the two became partners.
Their first full-time shop filled up fast. As Jake told KBTX, with “less than a dozen people it was wall to wall.” In July 2022 they broke ground on a new building, and on March 18, 2023 Circle Star opened its new home at 6320 Hwy 90 N, between Anderson and Roans Prairie. They laid it out so it would never feel like a warehouse.
The St. Porktrick’s Day Hog Hunt
Every March, Circle Star hosts the St. Porktrick’s Day Hog Hunt: a hog hunting competition that wraps up with a party at the shop, with live music, food, raffles and hourly firearm giveaways. Feral hogs do real damage to farms and ranches around Grimes County. The hunt puts a dent in them and raises money for the people who keep this community safe.
- 2023: the hunt doubled as the grand opening of our new shop, with proceeds going to the Todd Mission Volunteer Fire Department.
- 2024: the sixth year of the hunt raised $20,679.82 for the Anderson Volunteer Fire Department, money the department put toward tools and rescue equipment for its trucks.
- 2025: the hunt supported a local volunteer fire department and a Grimes County scholarship, and Texas Brigades youth cadets volunteered at the weigh-in station.

A gathering place, not just a gun store
Circle Star is where folks around Anderson come to talk hunting, trade stories and catch up. We host Whiskey and Cigar Nights with the brands we carry and Cars and Coffee mornings through the year. The shop has seen marriage proposals, and Jake once officiated a wedding right here in the store.
Jake and Jason also record the Circle Star Firearms & Outdoors Podcast from the shop every week, so the conversations from our counter reach people well beyond Grimes County.
About Anderson
Anderson is the county seat of Grimes County. The town was named for Kenneth Anderson, the last vice president of the Republic of Texas, who died at the Fanthorp Inn on July 3, 1845. The inn still stands as the Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site. Anderson became the county seat in 1846, and the Grimes County Courthouse, built in 1894 and restored in 2002, sits on a rise in the middle of the street. Locals call Anderson the “Little Rome of Texas” for the seven hills it was built on.
We are proud to be a small business in a small town with a big history, and we plan to be here for a long time.
